High School students in Large Animal Health and Nutrition with Mr. Mack have been learning about cattle diseases and animal ear tagging. Students performed California Mastitis Tests comparing milk samples to see what the somatic cell counts (scc) were. Dr. Leah Secord, a Sauk Prairie alum and veterinarian at Waunakee Veterinary Clinic, collected the samples. Students also learned how to properly tag an animal ear. They were given different tags and had to tag the ear in the correct space. This class time was a great example of hands on learning of skills and knowledge that are used regularly on farms. Thank you Dr. Secord for being a part of our students' learning ☺️

Agriculture Education classes are planting now for a colorful holiday season. Students have been in the greenhouse trying to grow poinsettias. Poinsettias require hours of complete darkness. As this is the first full year in the greenhouse, students are experimenting to see if they can grow poinsettias to then sell. Classes have also been growing micro greens for the school lunch program! #spsdlearns #togetherwesoar #ageducation

We are excited to welcome new staff members to the Sauk Prairie School District… Meet Aaron Athas, District Assessment and Career Planning Coordinator. He has a Bachelors of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin Platteville, a Masters in Special Education from Minnesota State University Mankato and an Educational Specialist Degree from Concordia University St. Paul. Originally from Ft. Atkinson, WI, Aaron moved back to Wisconsin with his wife after living in Minnesota for several years. During Aaron’s sophomore year of high school his English teacher was a young Mr. Chad Harnisch, who is now principal at SPHS. Aaron’s wife is an organic farmer and he has a history as a professional singer having headlined major festivals in Paris, France. Aaron realizes he is the bi-product of all the teachers in his family. While he originally thought about a career in broadcasting, that plan changed during his fourth year of college. After 13 years teaching far from his hometown, Aaron is returning to his original home and his home state. He continues to be inspired by watching teachers dedicated to their craft, who relentlessly work toward improving themselves and meeting the challenges of our students and the community at large. Welcome to Sauk Prairie! #togetherwesoar #saukprairieschools
